Sonder
[B.Arch 04] - Sonder is the realization that others are living a life as vivid and complex as your own. This powerful sentiment perceived through residential architecture is epitomized by the window. For most, it is an element of architecture that separates inside from out, but the window provides those outside a glimpse in. Behind every window there is a story, a history of occupation, that is rarely seen, and even less commonly experienced by those who pass by. Spaces contain memories of life, past and present, but are easily forgotten. The film explores the passage of time within the domain of residence and as it is perceived by an outsider. Only once night falls can an outsider peak into the universe contained behind walls and realize that a world similar to their own exists alongside theirs. By exploring life within a specific home and tracing the use of space by one family for over a generation, the film will give viewers a sense of the relative permanence of architecture contrasted with the ever-changing actors that exist within it.
